CLEVELAND -- A political leader in Ukraine says Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk was buried in the U.S. two weeks after his death in Germany while awaiting the appeal of his war crimes conviction.

The deputy head of the nationalist Ukrainian Republican Party, Rostislav Novozhenets, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that the Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk was buried at an undisclosed U.S. location March 31.

Defense attorney Dennis Terez said Friday he cannot comment on the burial.

Demjanjuk died before the appeal of his war crimes conviction was finished.

He lived for decades in suburban Cleveland. He was convicted in May of more than 28,000 counts of being an accessory to murder at a death camp in occupied Poland. He called it a case of mistaken identity.
