CLEVELAND -- On Sunday April 22, RTA will provide free bus service from Public Square to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Earth Day celebration.
Riders pay the usual fare on any RTA bus or train to Public Square. Then you can go to the West Roadway, north of Superior Avenue, and look for a special EarthFest bus stop sign.
The destination signs on the front of the bus will say "Metroparks Zoo."
Ride free on RTA clean-diesel buses from Public Square to the Zoo's Administration parking lot, near 4101 Fulton Parkway.
Customers on the other RTA buses and trains should ask the bus operator for proof of their ride. This proof can be exchanged for a free Zoo ticket at the box office.
Without this proof, they must pay regular Zoo admission.
In addition, the following bus routes serve the Zoo -- #20, #35, #51 and #79A/B. Customers who ride theses buses should ask their operators for a proof of payment, so they can be admitted to the Zoo for free.
Because of Innerbelt construction, buses will replace trains that day on all Rapid service east of Tower City. Riders should go to their usual Rapid station.
Replacement buses will pick up and drop them off on Public Square, near the intersection of Euclid and Ontario, in front of the former Higbee Building.
The Metroparks Zoo is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Shuttles from Public Square to the Zoo run every 15-30 minutes. RTA will display the educational community bus on display, staffed with RTA employees.
This year marks the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day. EarthFest is celebrating "the year of local and sustainable foods." RTA is a sponsor of EarthFest, Ohio's largest educational environmental event.
All RTA buses are equipped with bike racks.
Environmentally friendly fuels - electric rail cars, and clean diesel and hybrid-electric buses -- power 100 percent of RTA's fleet.
The event is organized by the Earth Day Coalition, a Cleveland-based non-profit environment organization.
Earth Day is the longest running Earth Day celebration in the nation.
