AKRON -- Denise Abbott's decision to discipline her daughter via Facebook has gone viral, but the Akron mother says she's confident in her parental decision, which she'll explain Friday morning on NBC's The Today Show.

Denise Abbott was only trying to get her daughter's attention, but she ended up getting attention from across the globe.

Her decision to create a photo showing a red "X" over the mouth of her 13-year-old daughter, Ava, and then post the photo on Facebook as punishment, has drawn criticism and praise from as far away as Australia.

Abbott uploaded the photo April 22 after her daughter's latest bout of immaturity, Abbott said, in which Ava talked back too many times and blasted her mother on-line.

Abbott said she had taken away her daughter's cell phone and barred her from the Internet for previous misbehavior, but this time required a more creative approach to make a point.

Abbott shared her story with Channel 3 News reporter Eric Mansfield and, within 36 hours, she received calls from multiple network television shows and international journalists from Toronto to Australia.

Abbott will share her story Friday on NBC's The Today Show, which discussed the photo in segments Wednesday and again Thursday, which included Rosie O'Donnell criticizing Abbott's decision.

In an email,  Abbott said she was pleased to know that Whoopi Goldberg had defended her decision on "The View."

Abbott has since replaced the photo with one of her dogs, but she said that was her plan all along.

Once Ava had learned her lesson and written back to those who had inquired, Abbott intended to remove the photo and slowly allow her to regain her Facebook page and cell phone.
