MINERVA -- It's no surprise there is great debate whether districts are doing enough to ensure their safety to and from school.

Since 2000, nearly 1,400 people have died in school transportation-related accidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most of those died between three and four o'clock, on the ride home from school.

There were just minor injuries after the the Minerva bus collided with a street sign in Summit County Monday.

The driver, Carol Cogan, 71, was monitoring her grandchild and the other second grade passengers through the rearview mirror. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says that one glance was all it took to cause the crash.

The Minerva school superintendent is backing his driver.

"She is a veteran driver in her last year. She has a super safe driving record," Superintendent Joe Chaddock said.

The Ohio Department of Education requires school bus drivers to submit to drug and alcohol tests, state and federal background checks and Ohio pre-service training.

Drivers must have a valid commercial driver's License.

They must be of legal age with two years experience, physically capable of managing and lifting preschool and special needs children and have the ability to cope with stressful situations.

The Ohio State Patrol says Cogan will be cited for this accident but did not indicate what affect it could have on her license.
