AKRON -- Drivers got to spin their wheels on a newly resurfaced roadway today as the eastbound side of I-277/US 224 officially reopened after it closed four weeks ago between I-76 (Kenmore Leg) and I-77.
Multiple ramps connected to the Kenmore Leg that were closed throughout the duration of the project have also reopened.
But despite this phase of road work coming to an end, there are fresh closures on the horizon.
From Friday, June 1 through Friday, June 8, the westbound side of I-76 (Kenmore Leg) will be closed between I-77 and I-277 for bridge repairs. The detour will be I-77 South to I-277 West.
During that week, the following ramp closures will also be in place:
- I-77 South to I-76 West (Kenmore Leg). The detour is I-77 South to I-277 West.
- I-76 West/I-77 North to the Kenmore Leg. The detour is I-77 South to I-277 West.
- I-76 West/I-77 North to East Avenue. The detour is I-77 North to Vernon Odom Boulevard.
- Entrance ramp from 22nd Street to I-76 West.
Then, in a few weeks, crews are expected to perform more resurfacing and bridge repairs and will need to shut down all westbound lanes of I-277/US 224 between I-76 (Kenmore Leg) and I-77 for about a month. That closure has tentatively been scheduled to start on Monday, June 18.
According to ODOT, this work is part of a $13.2 million project to resurface I-277, I-76 and US 224 from the Kenmore Leg to I-77 and continuing on US 224 to just east of Kelly Avenue. The entire project, which also includes bridge work to 18 structures, is slated for completion in late October 2013.
