Hair stylists forming first line of defense against domestic violence

CLEVELAND -- Some say she may be the first line of defense against domestic violence -- your hair stylist.

Stylists usually see clients on a regular basis and can often spot signs of abuse that others may never see.

Now, a new program is training salon professionals so they can tell victims what help is available and where they can get help.

One in every four women will be a victim of domestic violence. Victims will often confide in friends or family, but more often than not, they're also reaching out to their hair stylist.

That's why a national program called "Cut It Out" has been brought to Northeast Ohio -- and for the first time, it is endorsed by the Ohio Attorney General.

The recent launch event was meant to raise awareness and celebrate three women who were victims of domestic violence.

They participated in a fashion show.

Jennifer Roth with the Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland says the program will give stylists new tools and information that may save lives.

"It's really important to train salon professionals because people talk to their professionals [and are] more likely to talk to them than their doctor," Roth said. "Not only what to do next, but what not to do. Direct them in a safe way."

A total of 23 local salons are now participating in the program.
