EAST CLEVELAND -- Mayor Gary Norton has confirmed that city councilwoman Mildred Brewer has died after a battle with cancer.
Brewer died late Saturday night in Hospice care.
Brewer became a member of council in 2000. Formerly, she held the position of Vice President of City Council and chair of the Health and Safety Committee.
"She always, always, always made sure that the people of East Cleveland were as safe as possible," said Mayor Gary Norton.

"She taught me a lot about politics, a lot about being a good person, and a lot about being a good servant," he added.
Councilwoman Brewer believes in civic engagement, and has been a part of the world of politics for over 40 years. She was the Highest Elected State of Ohio Delegate for Jimmy Carter and Highest Elected Delegate for the 11th Congressional District for Bill Clinton.
Funeral arrangements for Brewer have not been released at this time.
