CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Clinic and Ohio University have announced plans to expand physician training at the clinic's South Pointe Hospital in suburban Cleveland.
The deal for a medical school extension campus was announced Monday by the research hospital and Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Pending accreditation, the initial class of 32 students will enroll in 2015. The Ohio University medical training program has long sent students to South Pointe Hospital in Warrensville Heights for third- and fourth-year clinical rotations.
Ohio University committed $36 million to the collaboration and the Clinic $13 million for renovations, faculty and staff.
Backers say the plan is meant to build on Ohio University's reputation for training physicians who stay in Ohio to practice.
