BRUNSWICK-- Animal Control Officer Mike Kellums is already getting calls this week: reports of people leaving dogs in hot cars.

Kellums says, even five minutes is too long when the weather is hovering around 90 degrees.

The temperature inside the car can get much hotter than the outside air.

"Dogs cool themselves off by breathing. So whatever the temperature of the air inside is, that's what they're cooling themselves with. It can become dangerous within minutes. I don't think people realize that. Five minutes is too long," Kellums said.

Elsewhere, the Ohio Department of Transportation has people trained to spot signs of heat stroke on construction sites.

A spokesperson says, workers are allowed to take breaks in the shade when needed.  Coolers of cold water are also kept on site.
