The number of deaths associated with the swine flu in 2009 may have been much higher than previously thought.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease control and prevention estimate that worldwide more than 284,000 people died from the H1N1 flu virus.

That's 15 times higher than earlier estimates.

The majority of deaths appeared to be in people younger than age 65 and those living in Southeast Asia and Africa.
