MEDINA COUNTY -- It happened in an instant. We're learning more about a horrible accident between a pick-up truck and an Amish buggy carrying a young couple and their child.

All three members of the Swartzentruber family remain in critical condition in Akron hospitals.

The driver, Joseph Swartzentruber, 25, of Spencer, and his wife Katie Swartzentruber, 23, were both flown to Akron General Hospital and are currently listed in critical condition.

Their daughter, Lizzie, 2, was taken to Akron Children's Hospital and is in critical condition. She is in the intensive care unit, hospital officials said.

The driver of the pickup truck, Justin Frey, 28, of Cleveland, was not injured. He did not make a statement to investigators. The Ohio State patrol says he was released pending possible criminal charges.

Investigators say the buggy was rear-ended by Frey's truck.

The speed limit on Route 301, where the accident happened, is 55 miles per hour. It's not known how fast the truck was moving but investigators say Frey did not brake before the collision.

The State Patrol wants to know whether Frey was somehow distracted by something inside his vehicle.
