NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- After the heavy thunderstorms that rolled through Northeast Ohio Tuesday, one of Mother Nature's much smaller threats was to blame for throwing thousands of people in three cities into the dark early Wednesday morning.

A racoon managed to find its way into a substation, blowing two transformers and killing power to more than 7,300 households, a FirstEnergy spokesperson said.

North Olmsted was the hardest hit, but Olmsted Township and Fairview Park were also impacted.

In the early morning hours, electrical crews restored power to about half of those customers and expect to have the vast majority of homes back up before 7 a.m. Wednesday.

As of 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, 2,797 North Olmsted customers were without power, along with 963 in Olmsted Township.

Fairview Park residents should all have power restored.
