BAY VILLAGE -- Swimmers enjoy dip in Lake Erie but health department keeping close eye on water quality during heatwave.

Run-off from recent storms coupled with high temperatures have algae blooming in Lake Erie.

Most recently, Lake County experienced the sludge of a blue-green algae bloom. It closed beaches to swimming and officials have posted advisories to stay out of the water.

At Huntington Beach is Bay Village, the water quality is listed as "good" and that has swimmers extremely happy on this hot day.

"It was awesome. Nice and cool, a great way to cool off," says Kerri Rantala, of Rocky River. She and her friends spent the day at the beach.

Cuyahoga County Board of Health official Barry Grisez says they have no local beach advisories, but are watching closely.

"We monitor everything in Cuyahoga County outside the City of Cleveland."

Grisez says toxic algae can be a huge threat to human and animal safety. "It is fatal to pets. I mean. there have been cases where dogs have died."

Dogs that ingest the algae are at highest risk, either drinking the water or licking their fur after a swim.
