AKRON -- The blockades have been lifted and drivers are now able to access a major Akron roadway that has been closed for a month.

The closure of I-277/US 224 West between I-77 and I-76 (Kenmore Leg) started on June 18 for pavement repairs and resurfacing, forcing drivers to find alternate routes on already-busy roadways.

Many ramps were also closed along that stretch of roadway throughout the project.

ODOT says by completely closing the entire roadway, crews were able to finish the work in just four weeks when it "would normally take one year" to do.

ODOT also says the complete closure resulted in zero work-zone injuries.

The closure was the second month-long project to strike that area as crews had shut down the eastbound side of I-277/US 224 starting April 23 between I-77 and I-76 for similar road repairs and resurfacing.

This work is all part of a $13.2 million project to resurface I-277, I-76 and US 224 from the Kenmore Leg to I-77 and continuing on US 224 to just east of Kelly Avenue.

The entire project, which also includes bridge work to 18 structures, is slated for completion in late October 2013.
