AKRON -- Vandals strike and tear apart Mason Park community garden.
The kids who tend the garden at Mason Park Community Center saw their hard work destroyed. All the digging, planting, weeding, watering was torn out by vandals over the weekend.
Karen Edwards, project coordinator and teacher with Farm to School, is using the damage as a learning tool.
"I was instantly angry but I knew we had to fix this for them. We have to show them that we can fix this, that good will conquer," she said.
The gardens are two years old and are managed by the NEOhaus Institute. They have built raised flower and vegetable beds and a storage shed using grant money from a number of sources.
"We are looking at security measures, but our grants have run out for this year," says Tom Crain, of NEOhaus Institute.
They are looking for donations of vegetable plants and seeds to get the garden back into shape. The kids can't wait to get their hands dirty again, working towards a good harvest later this year.
