UNDATED - Emergency officials in New York say a tornado has touched down in the city of Elmira and there are reports of several buildings damaged.
Chemung County emergency officials say tornado touched down after 4 p.m. in the Southern Tier city. They were assessing the situation and did not know if there were any injuries.
The National Weather Service issued its first tornado warning at 3:35 p.m. and have received reports of fallen trees and siding damage. The storm system was heading east.
Meanwhile, authorities are evacuating campers in tents from 10 state campgrounds across the Empire State with a wave of severe storms expected through the afternoon and evening.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 32 counties through 9 p.m. Utilities report about 5,000 customers with power outages in Steuben and Allegany counties.
