AVON -- A man crashed his car while fleeing from police in Avon, injuring an infant inside Tuesday afternoon, police said.
WKYC obtained the police dashcam video on Wednesday.
Avon Police were first called to the Kohl's department store in Avon Commons for a theft in progress at about 3:35 p.m.
An in-store theft prevention officer told Avon Police that a hispanic male suspect, Josue Rodriguez, 30, of Lorain, left the store with stolen merchandise.
He reportedly had a baby with him and had thrown the young child into his car before speeding away.
There were numerous reports of Rodriguez driving recklessly almost striking many other vehicles.
The Avon Police spotted him running a red light on Detroit Road, just east of State Route 83, with more near-collisions with several vehicles.
He refused to stop for police. Rodriguez reportedly hit a vehicle at Detroit Road and S.R. 83.
Officers continued chasing the suspect who was traveling extremely fast, police said.
When officers were told there was a baby in the car, they decided to stop chasing the suspect.
Rodriguez attempted to drive through a red light at Detroit Road and S.R. 611, striking a car driving through the intersection, continuing into a second car stopped at the red light. The second crash pushed the stopped car into a third car.
Rodriguez and the infant, as well as the driver of the second car hit were all injured.
Rodriguez and the baby were taken to Avon Emergency Care Center. Rodriguez was later flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
The baby was later taken to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. The other driver was taken to St. John Westshore Hospital.
None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
The pursuit only lasted for one mile and less than one minute.
According to Avon Police, Rodriguez faces several charges, including robbery, felony fleeing/eluding, driving under suspension, child endangering, OVI (operating a vehicle while intoxicated), reckless operation, hit skip, seat belt and child restraint.
