PAINESVILLE -- Lake County Common Pleas Judge Joe Gibson sentenced former Lake County sheriff's deputy Gary Stroud to life in prison Wednesday for murdering his wife.

Stroud, 58, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, admitted killing Diane Stroud, 53, at their Marine Parkway home sometime between Oct. 9 and Nov. 27 and told people she had run off with a cult.

Stroud was arrested Nov. 27 after his daughter found her mother's body in the family's garage. Prosecutors said Diane Stroud had been struck in the head several times with a hammer and died from blunt-force trauma to the head.

Gibson also gave Stroud an extra year in prison for abuse of a corpse.

Stroud pleaded guilty to murder and gross abuse of a corpse July 16 before Gibson.

Neighbors reported the couple had been having marital problems and they had not seen his wife, a former Mentor-on-the-Lake council member, for about six weeks.
