SHAKER HEIGHTS -- Former Shaker Heights Mayor Patricia Mearns passed away Sunday after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Mearns had been coping with Alzheimer's for a number of years, and became critically ill last week.

Mearns was a loyal public servant who served as mayor of Shaker Heights from 1992 to 1999.

Mearns' involvement in the Shaker Heights community began as President of the Malvern School PTA in the late 1970s.

She served as a member of the Shaker Family Center, Fund for the Future, Shaker Heights Meals on Wheels and Shaker Youth Center boards of trustees.

Two excellent examples of her effectiveness as a leader are the successful campaigns of the Shaker Heights Levy of 1981 and the more recent levy of the Shaker Heights Library.

In honor of her dedication to the community, she was honored with the first Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Relations Award.

Pat's funeral will be at Our Lady of Peace Church in Cleveland on Thursday.
