AKRON --  Michael Dokes, a former world heavyweight boxing champion from northeast Ohio, has died.

The Rhoden Memorial Home in Akron confirmed Dokes died Saturday. He was 54.

Known as "Dynamite," Dokes became the World Boxing Association heavyweight champion in 1982 after he defeated Michael Weaver. He tallied 53 wins, six losses and two draws during his career.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported Dokes died at an Akron hospice from liver cancer.

Russell Dossie, former vice president of the Summit County Hall of Fame Boxing Association, told the newspaper that Dokes was known for his speed and endurance.

The Rhoden Memorial Home said services for Dokes are still pending.
