A lot of people buy generics but that might not always be the best option.

The Coupon guru Jeff Kaplan, from TLC's "Extreme Couponing," is spreading his advice, saying generic isn't always cheaper. He recommends looking at the price per ounce. Make sure you're getting the same amount. Also, off name brands are cheaper.

But if you can pair a name brand with a coupon and a loyalty card, that can lead to a deeper discount. Quality also counts, like in the case of paper towels. A cheaper quality means you'll have to use more and therefore not save.

Amazon.com is unveiling a cheaper option for college students buying textbooks. The retailer is renting textbooks, which is becoming a popular option. The company launched "Amazon textbook rental" which allows students to rent books and save up to 70 percent. The rentals can also qualify for free shipping, and come with prepaid labels so students can send them back when they're done.

So, are you still waiting to take that summer vacation? Procrastination in this case, could pay off. "Smart Money" reports an increase in late summer and last-minute, vacation deals. one downside: September can be a risky month for hurricanes, if you're thinking tropical beaches.
