COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- One man died and another was hospitalized after an early morning crash in Columbia Township Friday.
The two men were headed south on East River Road (State Route 252), when the driver lost control of his pickup truck and hit a guardrail, between Snell Road and State Route 82.
The truck went into an embankment off of the road and hit some trees.
The driver, Dustin C. Phillips, 26, of Columbia Station, died in the crash.
His passenger, Benjamin A. Sarantos, 24, of Chardon, was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center. His injuries are not life-threatening.
A neighbor in the area helped emergency crews get equipment down to the truck so first responders could rescue the victims.
Phillips was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. It is not known if Sarantos was wearing a seatbelt.
Ohio State Highway Patrol, Columbia Township and Eaton Township fire and EMS, the Olmsted Falls Fire Department, Lorain County Coroner's Office and Dunlap's Towing all responded to the crash.
Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, the Highway Patrol said.
