WESTLAKE -- Police from Avon, Rocky River, North Olmsted and North Ridgeville catch a suspected carjacker from Avon in a Westlake apartment after a foot chase.
Police say that at 6:43 a.m. Monday, Avon police reported a Ford Taurus taken in a carjacking in Avon was last seen on Detroit Road near Bassett Road.
That vehicle then crashed into a Ford pickup driven by a Westlake man, 54, at that intersection.
The driver of the carjacked Taurus ran off and forced his way into a nearby apartment. The occupants of the apartment called 911 and police arrived.
When caught, he fought with Westlake police officers there, was tasered and then taken to St. John Medical Center by Westlake EMS.
He is now in the custody of Avon police. The pickup driver was also taken to St. John Medical Center for face, back, and arm injuries.
While all this was going on, Bassett School was placed on lockdown after a second man ran from police at the same intersection about 7:22 a.m. He was arrested by Westlake police at 9:12 a.m. near the Hunters Chase apartment complex on Detroit Road.
Police say his identity is uncertain, but he claims to be a juvenile. Preliminary findings are that he may be an accomplice of the other suspect and may have been in Westlake trying to find his partner in crime after dumping another vehicle that was stolen in Cleveland, police said.
That vehicle was turned over to Cleveland police at the scene. Bassett School was given the all-clear at 9:15 a.m.
