CHAGRIN FALLS -- The clouds blocked out the hot sun and no rain dared to fall as the U.S. Navy Band from the Great Lakes region, joined by members of the U.S. Marine Band based in New Orleans, played for nearly 800 people in Riverside Park here for an hour and a half Saturday afternoon.
The crowd, filled with families, couples, Navy and Marine veterans and even a wedding party that had planned to have their pictures taken in Riverside Park, applauded after nearly every song.
When the "Marines Hymn" was played, every Marine veteran in the audience stood up. and received loud applause after the hymn was over.
The "Marines' Hymn" is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps. It is the oldest official song in the United States military. The "Marines' Hymn" is typically sung at the position of attention as a gesture of respect.
You can see the U.S. Navy Band in Port Clinton at the Catawba Island Club from 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. It has a full schedule of events Sunday and Monday.
