CLEVELAND -- Cleveland police are asking for the public's help in locating a vehicle involved in a hit-skip crash on I-71.

The crash left the victim, a police officer from Pinckney, Michigan, severely injured.

According to police, off-duty officer Robert Charles Bielak was headed south on I-71 on Tuesday when he pulled into the berm just south of the Ridge Road overpass to check his map.

A car struck Bielak and continued on without stopping.

Based on witness statements and evidence from the scene, the wanted vehicle is believed to be a 1992-1999 Buick LeSabre that is light beige metallic in color. The vehicle will have heavy damage to the right front fender and bumper. The impact caused the car to lose a right side hubcap and mirror.

The vehicle was last seen headed south past the West 150th Street exit.

Anyone with information should contact the Cleveland Division of Police Accident Investigation Unit at 216-623-5295.

The Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association has set up a fund to help the Bielak family while they stay in Cleveland during Robert's recovery.

Donations can be made to the "Officer Robert Bielak Fund", Cleveland Police Credit Union. 2301 Payne Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, 44114.

The CPPA has already contributed $1,000.
