CLEVELAND -- Police have arrested a Berea man in the hit-skip of a Michigan police officer who had pulled his motorcycle off I-71 onto the berm Tuesday Sept. 4.
Police arrested Gary Fury, 54, of Berea, about 10 a.m. Monday at his home in Berea.
He was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular assault and hit skip in the incident involving off-duty Pinckney, Michigan police officer Robert Charles Bielak.
The crash left Bielak severely injured and he remains in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.
According to police, Bielak was headed south on I-71 on Tuesday when he pulled into the berm just south of the Ridge Road overpass to check his map.
Police say a car struck Bielak and continued on without stopping.
The Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association has set up a fund to help the Bielak family while they stay in Cleveland during Robert's recovery.
