SOLON -- Police say a caller tried to extort money from a 90-year-old man and his wife and threatened to bomb their house.

Police say that at 6:16 p.m. Sept. 14, a Solon man, 90, reported that he and his wife had received a phone call at 3 p.m., informing them that they had won a car.

He was was told that he would be receiving money in his account.

When told that they were not interested, the caller called back and stated that, if the resident did not go to Walmart and load $200 on a Money Pak Green Dot card, then he was going to bomb their house.

The caller also said the house was under surveillance.

The resident went to Walmart and when the customer service representative at Walmart was told of the call, the representative called police.

Police say the phone call, which is a current scam, originated in Jamaica and the threats were without merit.

They advise anyone getting such a call to immediately contact police.
