The first debate is now over. Here are some of the main points made by President Obama and Republican Mitt Romney fromn the Magnus Arena in Denver, Colorado.
PBS Executive Editor Jim Lehrer moderated the debate.
10:26 p.m. Romney says "I've done it before and I'll do it again...I can work with others...." President Obama says "we have seen progress under Republican control of the House in Congress..."
10:25 p.m. Lehrer asks: if elected, or re-elected in your case Mr. President, what will you do about partisan politics?"
10:23 p.m. Romney: "I have no plan to cut education funding...I don't want to cut our commitment to education....I care about education...."
10:20 p.m. President said "...as far as community colleges, we see some doing great work....when it comes to making college affordable..."
10:18 p.m. Romney said "...the role of government is to protect the documents, like the Constitution...and as far as school funding, the money should follow the child..."
10:09 p.m. President and Romney both mentioned the Cleveland Clinic when talking about healthcare...

9:58 p.m. President says "...families who worry about going bankrupt if they get sick...that's why we worked on this...making sure middle-class families are secure in this country...Obamacare says insurance companies can't jerk you around..."
9:57 p.m. Romney says he wants the Affordable Care Act repealed.."the cost of healthcare is prohibitive and Obamacare says it will cost more...Obamacare kills jobs..."
9:51 p.m. Romney on regulation: "You can't have people opening banks in their garage..."
9:41 p.m. On to the third of three questions on the economy. Social Security: President says he and Romney have a "similar view on Social Security..."
9:30 p.m. On how to cut the deficit: ..."
9:25 p.m. Romney said " I am not in favor of a $5 trillion dollar tax cut.....my plan is not like anything that has been tried before...my priority is to put people back to work in this country.."
9:16 p.m. Romney says "I won't put in place a tax cut that adds to the deficit..."
9:12 p.m. Romney says the middle-income Americans and families have been crushed under President Obama...middle-income families can't pay the high gasoline prices....need to bring the tax rates down, for both individuals and companies..
9:08 p.m. Create new jobs? Romney says we need to be "energy independent....have more trade with Latin America....get us to a balanced budget...champion small business..."
9 p.m. President Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney took the stage. Lehrer's first question: What would you do to go about creating new jobs? President Obama first wished his wife a happy anniversary tonight.
To answer the question, the President says taxes need to be cut, the deficit needs to be reduced and "America does best when the middle class does best"
8:50 p.m. A few minutes before 9 p.m., Lehrer talked to the audience in Denver about how to behave during the debate. He asked the wives of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to "take names, and enforce the rules" about proper audience behavior.
