PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP -- Firefighters are still battling a stubborn fire at an animal feed plant.
Because of the smoke, officials are keeping school students who live in the path of the smoke column at schools. Elementary students who live between Hardy and Bacon are being kept at the middle school until parents arrive. Middle school students are being kept at the high school.
The plant has been evacuated but no neighborhoods have been impacted.
Officials say the fire at Hardy Industrial Technologies began at around 9:30 a.m. The company makes animal feed.
The plant has an internal sprinkler system but it was unable to suppress the fire. Departments from throughout the area were called to battle the five alarm fire.
Workers have been evacuated from the plant. The vegetable oil used in production is a wax like material and began to flow out of the building towards the rail cars. There was concern one of the cars could explode, so the decision was made to evacuate.
Fire officials say that the smoke does not pose any health hazards. The EPA is monitoring the situation.
