CLEVELAND -- A Berea man has been sentenced to 2-and-a-half years in prison for striking an off-duty Michigan police officer with his car, then leaving the scene.
A judge also sentenced Gary Fury to five years license suspension.
The officer, Robert Charles Bielak of Pinckney, Michigan, was traveling by motorcycle through Ohio on I-71 in September when Fury struck him near the Ridge Road overpass. The impact severed the officer's left leg below the knee.
Officer Bielak spent 52 days in the hospital, including several weeks on life support, as a result of his injuries.
He spoke in court of the harrowing ordeal and the bedside vigil kept by his family and friends.
Officer Bielak thanked Cleveland Police and the Northeast Ohio law enforcement community for their quick work in making an arrest.
