With one week remaining, Notre Dame sits atop every poll in the country. With Alabama ranked #2 in the BCS poll, could Notre Dame end up playing Alabama in the BCS Championship game?

I know it's not prudent to look ahead, and I know Notre Dame still has to beat Southern Cal and Alabama has to beat Auburn Saturday, but who would have thought that BOTH Oregon and Kansas State would lose Saturday?

Until next Saturday night is over and we know the scores, I will be a nervous wreck.

My dilemma is further compounded by the fact that my second favorite team that I have cheered for over the decades is the Crimson Tide. Good grief.

So, the BCS Championship game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Monday Jan. 7 in the Sun Life Stadium in Miami. I hear the weather in Miami is beautiful that time of year.

A Florida friend who has loved the Tide forever (and first made me aware of the Tide) may have a bit of sympathy for my being torn between wanting a Notre Dame win and wanting him to be happy with a Tide win. And I was certainly happy last year when Alabama was the BCS champ.

In fact, I would gladly wear both Tide and Irish regalia Jan. 7 so we would both be happy. I know he won't wear anything but Tide paraphernalia and that's OK.

But I digress.

I know the dangers of looking ahead and I know there are Ohio State fans who know they are not bowl-eligible but wanted to at least top the AP Coaches poll at the end of the season but I don't think that will happen either. Ohio State faces Michigan this week and that will be an interesting game.

As far as Notre Dame and Southern Cal, I just learned that USC quarterback Matt Barkley, who left the UCLA game with a shoulder injury, will miss the ND-SoCal game and the new USC starting quarterback will be Max Wittek.

Wittek is a redshirt USC freshman who stands 6 foot 4 inches tall and weighs 235 pounds so I wouldn't say he's easy to just run over.

I think Notre Dame needs to play its best game against USC ever so they deserve to be the #1 team in the final rankings. After that, I'll let the professionals sort it out.

But what I wouldn't give to see ND Coach Brian Kelly battle it out against Alabama's legendary Nick Saban. That alone would be worth watching the game.
