EASTLAKE -- A knife-carrying Mentor man fought with Walmart store security in Eastlake when he was caught just before noon Saturday.
Police went to the Walmart after being told a shoplifter was fighting with store security guards.
The security guards said the man was escorted to the security office and started fighting and struggling with them. During the struggle, a knife was taken from the shoplifter that was concealed in his clothing.
The man, identified as Nicholas W. Giardini, 25, of Mentor, was taken into custody and charged with robbery, providing false information and having an active assault warrant through Mentor police.
Another 20-year-old man from Mentor was arrested for petty theft.
The total amount of the Walmart items taken was $319.44.
During an inventory of their vehicle, police discovered $276.54 worth of stolen merchandise from Lowes in Mentor.
Police said the two men had tried to return the merchandise to Willoughby's Lowes but they would not accept the return without a receipt.
Giardini was arraigned Monday morning and did not enter a plea. He was released on a posted bond of $7,500 and his next court date is 1 p.m. Nov. 20.
