CLEVELAND -- Cuyahoga County's widely respected Elections Director Jane Platten is stepping down to take a new job.

On Tuesday, Platten told the Board of Elections that she will leave her post Dec. 14 to accept the job of Chief of Staff for new Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty.

Platten's successfully overseen two Presidential elections in which Cuyahoga County's voting system was under the microscope.

She proved to be an effective manager and upgraded the problem-plagued operation she took over in 2004.

Platten said she is leaving for a new challenge.

The four directors who preceded her left office amid questions of either  performance or inappropriate conduct.

McGinty's office commented on hiring Platten.

"I am honored to announce that, effective December 17, 2012, Jane Platten will be the new Chief of Staff at the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office. After leading the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections as the Director who managed two very successful Presidential elections and a comprehensive overhaul of the election systems and agency operations, I have asked Jane Platten to now lead our reorganization and justice system reform effort."

"Similar to the goal she achieved at the Board of Elections, her mission here will be to implement the reforms recommended by the Justice Management Institute's best practice studies so that our County Prosecutor's Office and the entire criminal justice culture is transformed into a transparent, data driven, performance measured and thus a far more accountable, efficient, effective system."

"If we create a business like culture of continuous improvement, the result will be less crime and lower costs, a safer community, and an increase in public confidence, an end to the exodus of families and business, which will set the stage for an economic resurgence."

McGinty is expected to capitalize on her connections and good will within the community to help his office's outreach efforts.

The prosecutor's office has about 340 employees.
