WASHINGTON -- Geauga County's future Congressman David Joyce (R-Russell Township) has been named to the U.S. House's powerful Appropriations Committee.

Joyce, 55, the former Geauga County Prosecutor for the past 18 years, will serve on the committee that directs federal spending.

Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers announcement

The two other Ohio Republicans who served on the committee -- Steve LaTourette (R-Bainbridge) and Steve Austria (R-Beavercreek) -- leave office Dec. 31.

Joyce was elected fill his congressional seat after LaTourette, the nine-term incumbent, unexpectedly announced his retirement from Congress this summer.

"It is a great honor and a privilege to serve on the Appropriations Committee, and I welcome these new Members and congratulate them on their approval by the Steering Committee. It is a pleasure to have these new Members on board, and I look forward to serving with them as the Committee continues its critical fiscal work on behalf of the American people," Rogers said, in a statement.

Joyce said he was "honored and grateful" for his selection, and looking forward "to an open and transparent process with the crucial goal of protecting and saving taxpayer dollars.""It is critical that we have people in Washington looking out for the American taxpayer and I take that duty very seriously," Joyce said, in a prepared statement.

The district Joyce will represent includes Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties and parts of Cuyahoga, Portage, Summit and Trumbull counties.

Joyce has an accounting degree from the University of Dayton. With his appointment to this powerful committee, he most likely will not be seated on other committees, according to LaTourette's Chief of Staff.
