CLEVELAND -- Dental and nursing students at Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University will work side-by-side in a test project beginning next month.

The Case nursing school landed a $265,000 grant to involve nursing students with patients getting dental care on campus.

The goal is to find new ways to bring together the nursing and dental professions in working and learning environments.

To begin, 32 dental and nurse practitioner students working in pairs will provide care one day a week.

Patients will receive oral exams and health screenings for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and blood cell counts. Patients who need follow-up care will be referred to doctors.

Case nursing dean Mary Kerr says the project will increase health-care access and alleviate the shortage of primary-care providers.
