Don't feel guilty celebrating the upcoming holidays because of the Newtown tragedy. Give your "presence" to friends and family.
There is nothing more that your friends and family want than having you close and knowing that you care about them.
You cannot change what happened in the past, you can only go forward.
You can't help but see news reports of the funerals of the children and school staff every day that reminds us of what happened in Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday.
We sent our prayers to their friends and and families and we have, in turn, seen our local schools become more vigilant for now.
We can ask why this had to happen to 20 small children who had their lives ahead of them but there are no answers. That is the real meaning of the term "senseless tragedy."
To try and make sense of what happened will only sadden you more. Mothers and fathers have hugged their children a bit tighter since that day and elected officials will struggle with what to do now on a variety of topics, like gun control, assault weapons and school security.
Keeping us safe is usually a job relegated to police officers and others in authority charged with protecting us. But that is not always possible. In Sandy Hook, the quick response of the "first responders" allegedly cut short Adam Lanza's overall plan of killing even more students, based on the amount of ammunition he brought with him.
Another case in point.
Late Tuesday night, an independent review of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi criticizes the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security for its work in Libya before the event in which four Americans were killed, two sources who have read the report told CNN late Tuesday.
The senior management in charge of diplomatic security "does not come out well at all," said one of the sources. Assistant Secretary of State Eric Boswell is head of diplomatic security and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Charlene Lamb oversaw State Department decisions on security at the diplomatic outpost.
Lamb testified before Congress about the security precautions; documents show Lamb denied repeated requests for additional security in Libya. The review has been sent to Capitol Hill, and an unclassified version was expected to be released as well.
While the attack on Americans in Benghazi was in no way comparable to what happened in Newtown, it shows a level of expectation of protection that was expected.
The teachers and staff at Sandy Hook did what they could to save their students but they were no match for the guns that Adam Lanza brought with him.
And we have to consider the mental state of those who have carried out these attacks on innocents across our nation in the past decades. They got their weapons through many different ways.
So you cannot make sense of senseless tragedies but you can use the next few weeks and into the New Year to let your family and friends know how much they mean to you.
Stay strong and know that our time on earth should be spent with those you care most about. We know what we've had in the past but the future is uncertain.
