CLEVELAND -- Hopes of heading off the tax hikes and spending cuts coming from a plunge over the fiscal cliff are getting dimmer.

Republican House members could not agree to support Speaker John Boehner's proposal to raise taxes on those making more than $1 million.

Outgoing Lake County Republican Congressman Steve LaTourette said, "It's horrible. It is the season of miracles and I hope a miracle occurs over the next ten days."

LaTourette and other Northeast Ohio Congress members and Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown all received on-line and/in person of delivery of petitions from hundreds of Channel 3 viewers, asking them to settle fiscal cliff issues.

The petitions said, "We the people of Northeast Ohio demand action to stop the series of tax increases and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff." You, our elected leaders in Washington D.C., have the power to avoid an economic disaster on January 1st, 2013. As your constituents, we elected you to work together toward the best interests of our region and our nation. We demand cooperation and compromise to create a sensible, sustainable economic plan that serves all of the American people."

Congress is heading home for Christmas with no clear plan to regroup on the fiscal cliff when they return with a handful of days before the New Year's deadline.

Failure to resolve the fiscal cliff will result in income tax hikes for low, medium and high income earners.

House Speaker John Boehner says he's still open to talks with the President to avoid the fiscal cliff.

"How we get there, God only knows," he said.

LaTourette will preside over the House on its first day back in session.

"I'm going to do everything I can to move this forward," he said.

He continued, "All Americans should be asking their leaders, 'take off your red jersey, take off our blue jersey, start being an American and fix the problem.'"
