BUTLER, Pennsylvania - Two young brothers were killed when their mother lost control of her car and two others were hurt in a separate 14-vehicle pileup as police blamed freezing rain for dozens of crashes throughout western Pennsylvania.

Most of the wrecks occurred during a two-hour late-morning window Wednesday that affected Pittsburgh's northern suburbs and counties north and east of the city.

Three-year-old Liam Bintrim and his 11-month-old brother, Declan McCullough, died when their mother's car rolled on a rural road in Butler County, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

State police say two people were hurt in the separate pileup on Route 66 north of Marienville, Forest County, about 11 a.m.

The National Weather Service says black ice developed because the ground remained cold enough for rain to freeze despite air temperatures in the low 40s.
