CLEVELAND -- It should come as no surprise that yet another of Cleveland's elite chefs has been put in the spotlight.
Cleveland is quickly becoming known worldwide as one of the best culinary gems.
Brett Montgomery, Executive Chef of Sans Souci at Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, has been selected by a group of his peers as one of the best chefs in America.
He will be in Best Chefs America, which is known as "the ultimate reference guide to chefs," showcasing the very best in the United States.
Over 50,000 phone calls and 5,000 chef interviews were conducted to choose America's best for the yearly reference guide and Montgomery's creations helped put him on this elite list.
Chef Montgomery credits his mother with cultivating his love and interest in cooking food.
"I'd always helped my mother in the kitchen when she made traditional English meat and potatoes or sausage from scratch and I started taking culinary classes," Montgomery confesses.
He said it wasn't until his sophomore year in high school, when he made the choice between two majors -- architecture or culinary.
"My dad said 'Everyone needs to eat. Not everyone needs a house.' That did it. It was culinary from that point forward," he said.
After graduation from Paul Smith's College with a degree in Culinary Arts, Montgomery began his career with Marriott Hotels beginning as a line cook at Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg.
He was then promoted to Garde Manger.
He relocated to Renaissance Greenway Hotel in Houston working as Banquet Chef, then Sous Chef and finally as Executive Chef.
Montgomery joined Renaissance Cleveland Hotel as Executive Chef in April, 2010 where he oversees its banquet department, room service, VIP Club Lounge and Sans Souci, the hotel's restaurant.
Chef Montgomery credits his mom for guiding him toward his career path and credits his excellent staff for helping him win this nationwide honor.
