GREEN -- A Rocky River man is in custody and charged with robbery after being fished out of a canal by sheriff's deputies after jumping in to escape capture.
Just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Summit County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the BP at 3171 South Arlington Road for a robbery.
Deputies knew that earlier that morning, the same suspect had stolen cartons of cigarettes from the Sheetz located at 20 West Waterloo in Coventry and the Circle K on Massillon Road in Green.
Deputies say the man, now identified as Ahmad Salti, 52, of Rocky River, then went to the above-mentioned BP and stole 2 cartons of cigarettes.
As he tried to drive off, a witness reached in the driver's side window of Salti's vehicle and grabbed the steering wheel. The civilian was dragged for a short distance and then Salti drove off on Arlington Road.
A short time later, deputies located Salti on East Exchange Street in Akron.
Deputies stopped his vehicle and Salti jumped out and ran off towards the canal off of River Street with deputies chasing him.
Salti then jumped into the canal behind the Goodyear facility.
He immediately began yelling to the deputies for help once he entered the water. The deputies helped Salti out of the canal and placed him under arrest.
He was charged with robbery and also had existing arrest warrants for fraud and driving under suspension.
He was treated by the Akron Fire Department's EMS and then taken to a local hospital.
