Allen, TX (Sports Network) - Tulane's Ryan Griffin tossed two touchdown passes
and the Nation All-Stars tallied a 24-13 win over the Texas All-Stars in the
Texas vs. the Nation Game.
Griffin threw for 210 yards on 14-of-18 efficiency, while Bemidji State wide
receiver Brian Leonhardt registered 64 yards receiving and a score on four
catches for the Nation.
Texas Tech's Seth Doege was 9-of-18 for 87 yards and an interception for
Texas.
The Nation jumped out to a 17-0 lead as Leonhardt hauled in a 15-yard score
from Griffin, Idaho's Trey Farquhar nailed a 31-yard field goal and Florida's
Earl Okine returned a fumble two yards for a touchdown with 10:22 left in the
second.
Texas put the next 13 points on the board to pull within four with 5:13 to go
in the third. Abilene Christian's Morgan Lineberry hit a pair of field goals,
35 and 20 yards, respectively, to pull Texas within 17-6 heading into the
break. TCU's Matthew Tucker plunged in for a 1-yard score to make it 17-13.
Griffin found Syracuse's Marcus Sales for a 20-yard touchdown with 9:54
remaining to conclude the scoring.
The Texas vs. the Nation Game, which began in 2006, was re-branded as the
NFLPA Collegiate Bowl last year, but the contest moved back to its original
format this season.
GAME NOTES:
Over the first four years, the game was played at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso,
Texas before shifting to San Antonio a year ago. The 2013 game moved to Allen,
Texas, a suburb of Dallas.
