CLEVELAND -- The family of Valetta Martin, 45, was getting ready to throw her a surprise birthday party on Saturday, but now they're dealing with the shock of her murder.
Described as a sweet, giving person, she was taken from them Wednesday night.
Police say a gunfight started between two people in the field next to the apartment building on Amesbury Avenue. The police tape is still up, a car has multiple bullet holes, and at least one bullet hit Martin as she left her apartment.

The mother of five couldn't be saved. Her family was afraid something like this would happen because of the dangers that lived outside.
Now the family is left planning a different kind of ceremony. One to say goodbye to the woman who took care of so many others.
Police are not releasing any new details on the investigation.
