Cleveland: Woman falls through ice, pulled from Lake Erie

CLEVELAND -- A woman is being treated at MetroHealth Medical Center after falling through thin ice on Lake Erie and going into the frigid water.

According to a fire department spokesman, the woman intentionally walked out onto the ice in between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center.

Police say that officers arrived and could see the woman in the water beyond the ice with her face down. Two men were walking on the ice toward the victim.

One of the men had with a life preserver with him. He entered the water and pulled the female face up, at which point officers and the second man attempted to pull the two out of the water and onto the ice.

Officers and the men were able to place the preserver around the woman.

Cleveland firefighters, along with Cleveland Police officers, pulled the woman from the water. She was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for medical evaluation.

Both men involved in the rescue were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for medical evaluation as well.

The preliminary investigation reveals that one of the witnesses stated that he was outside smoking when he heard a group of kids yelling and looked over to see the victim's head "bobbing in the water."

He said he then grabbed the life preserver and went out to help the woman. Tjhe woman did not provide the officers with any information and is listed in the report as "Jane Doe."
