BAY VILLAGE -- A Westlake man is in the hospital after slamming an SUV into a tree and a fence while trying to flee from police.
Westlake police observed the 38-year-old driver going in and out of parking lots in the Crocker Park area just after midnight.
After the driver committed a number of moving violations, Westlake police signaled for him to stop. Instead, the man fled westbound on Clemens Road and then northbound on Bradley Road and into Bay Village.
The SUV went airborne while crossing a set of tracks and then at the intersection of Lake Road the driver failed to negotiate a left turn and hit a fence and then a tree.
The driver's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Police say a temporary tag stolen from an Elyria woman's 1994 Ford SUV was found on the 1994 Ford SUV the man was driving. In addition, police say the vehicle has been linked to a reported theft of items from a car at a hotel in the area where the driver was first spotted.
Police say the driver is currently not under arrest but charges are being considered. A warrant is being requested to further search the vehicle.
