KENT -- Banners and sweatshirts can be the best billboards for universities. And if you can stamp Final 4 or even GoDaddy.com Bowl on it, it makes even more money.

The publicity for the bowl game will be in the millions. They're still counting. Last summer's College World Series was another $3 million worth.

And let's not forget the Kent State Golden Flashes basketball run to the Elite 8 in 2002.

March Madness is as much about basketball as it is bucks. A few examples:

  • 2009: Cornell lost in the first round of the tournament but still won with a school record of donations of $3.5 million
  • 2011: Virginia Commonwealth made a run all the way to the Final 4, and the bank. Donations went up 376 percent

It's a simple formula: win, get in and cash in
