AKRON -- A 71-year-old man has been sentenced to six months behind bars after admitting he assaulted his neighbor with a power washer.

The incident stems from June 14 when Edwin Heatherly was using a high-powered pressure washer at his Oakland Avenue residence to clean his grill.

As Heatherly was working, his next-door neighbor of 30 years was upset that some of the grill's grime was coming over a fence and onto his home.

According to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office, the neighbor, who is deaf and mute, had a tough time getting Heatherly's attention. So, he sprayed his hose at Heatherly to make him aware of the situation.

That's when Heatherly sprayed his power washer at the victim, cutting his hands, arms, chin, neck and the area behind an ear.

Heatherly's wife called police, and when they arrived, the victim was found slumped in his yard bleeding profusely from his face, arms and hands.

Immediately after pleading guilty to one count of felonious assault Wednesday, a judge handed down Heatherly's jail sentence in addition to ordering him to have no contact with the victim.

Heatherly was also placed on probation for one year and ordered to pay the victim $43,000 in restitution.
