Every day nearly 400 men pass through the doors of 2100 Lakeside, a men's homeless shelter in downtown Cleveland.

And each man has a story.

"I could see something of dignity and something of an entire former life that had nothing to do with their condition of homelessness," says Lydia Bailey, the volunteer coordinator at 2100.

Lydia decided that the faces and stories needed to be seen and heard.

A trained photographer, Lydia began taking portraits of the men.

"It wasn't a dressed-up photograph," she explains. "It was the real person coming across."

Lydia used a small point-and-shoot camera, as opposed to a fancier version, to make her subjects feel more at ease.

Forty-five men posed for her, and Lydia recorded their stories as well. The portraits and stories were then turned into a traveling art exhibit.

"The men would see these photos and there is a sense of affirmation," Lydia says.
