Cleveland, OH -- The Cleveland Indians selected the contract of infielder Jason Giambi on Monday and released reliever Matt Capps.

Giambi's contract was selected from Triple-A Columbus, but he will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain and will be eligible to play on April 9.

Last season, the 42-year-old batted .225 with one home run and eight RBI over 60 games with Colorado.

He is a career .280 batter with 429 home runs and 1,405 RBI in 2,163 games with the Athletics, Yankees and Rockies.

Capps, 29, went 1-4 with a 3.68 ERA and 14 saves with the Minnesota Twins a year ago. He is 29-33 with 138 saves over eight Big League seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Twins.

This spring, he made six appearances and gave up two runs over six innings of work.

In other roster moves, Cleveland optioned catcher Yan Gomes and infielder Cord Phelps to Columbus (Int.) and placed pitcher Frank Herrmann on the 60-day disabled list.
