The Cleveland Browns have traded  quarterback Colt McCoy to the San Francisco 49ers.

The trade comes a week after the Browns signed veteran quarterback Jason Campbell to a two-year contract to compete with Brandon Weeden for the starting job.

In addition to McCoy the Browns traded their 6th round pick in this months draft (173rd overall pick) to the 49ers in exchange for San Francisco's 5th round pick (164th overall) and 7th round pick (227th overall).  The Browns move up nine spots in the fifth round and now hold two choices in that round, one pick in the sixth and two picks in the seventh round.

The trade sends the Browns into the 2013 Draft with seven picks.  It is the first draft under new owner Jimmy Haslam and his new front office team.

McCoy is headed into the final year of his rookie contract and will earn a base salary of $1.5 million, so there likely won't have to be any tinkering to his contract for him to serve as Colin Kaepernick's backup.

McCoy started 21 games for the Browns in his first two seasons after being drafted in the third round in 2010. He struggled as a full-time starter in 2011, as did the overall team on the way to a 4-9 record in games started by McCoy.

This past season, McCoy backed up first-round pick Brandon Weeden. McCoy appeared in only three games.
