BROADVIEW HEIGHTS -- Authorities have reopened a portion of I-77 North after a fatal crash near Route 82 in Broadview Heights.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office confirms that two people -- David Starr, 33, of Barberton, and Gail Bradley, 57, of Medina -- are dead as a result of the accident.

Apparently there are conflicting possible versions what happened.

One involves  a southbound vehicle crossing over the median and into the path of an oncoming northbound semi, causing the crash.

Five vehicles are involved.

But another reported version suggests a southbound collision with a vehicle or vehicles going through the barrier into oncoming traffic.

This part of I-77 has a guardrail.

A short distance away is a taller, concrete barrier.

ODOT was unwilling to do interviews about particulars of the barrier choices.

ODOT Spokeswoman Amanda Lee issued the following statement:

"ODOT sends our condolences to the families of the individuals involved in today's unfortunate accident on I-77 in Broadview Heights.  The section of I-77 between Oakes Road and Rockside Road was recently rebuilt and constructed with the latest and most current design standards for this type of roadway."

The choice of what barrier to use is an engineering decision involving a variety of factors including volume of traffic, size of the median and whether there are utility poles or drainage issues.
